Mainstream Republicans Celebrates Ralph Munro’s Legacy
Ralph Munro led a life dedicated to public service and improving life for Washington’s residents. While he physically passed away on March 20th his legacy will continue to be felt across Washington and beyond for many decades.
Some excellent articles and statements have already been published about Ralph’s impact on public policy, historic preservation, saving the orcas, and improving the lives of people with disabilities.
Another important part of Ralph’s legacy was his key role in helping champion moderate, bi-partisan values and in building Mainstream Republicans of Washington (MRW). MRW is seen today as the “Dan Evans Republican” wing of the Washington GOP.
As a young staffer working for Governor Dan Evans, Ralph was involved in the early years of organizing conferences that became known as the Cascade Conference. The first conference was in 1969 and this, now annual, conference brings together problem-solving Republicans to discuss how to tackle the problems facing Washington. It promotes thinking outside the usual partisan boxes and finding creative ways to deliver better outcomes for Washingtonians.
Ralph spent decades as Mainstream leader, including many years as a MRW Board Member. His zest for life, twinkling eyes and quick wit will be greatly missed. The organization he helped build will continue as we work to return moderate, practical Republicans back to governing majorities in Washington state.
MRW mourns the loss of Mainstream giants this year with the passing of Daniel J. Evans and Ralph Munro. These two embody the thoughtful policymaking and friendly, respectful bi-partisan governance that made the Evans years truly stand-out in Washington political history – and something to which we can strive to build towards again.
Ralph led a model public life in so many ways and is an inspiration to new generations of Mainstreamers who are working to build on the accomplishments of those giants who have now passed.
Ralph’s bagpipes are now silent, but he will long be remembered.
